Leader

I had this idea for 'leader' in mind since I saw the challenge posted last week - so I'm not really copying debris4spike :)

I would describe these as Willw's leads. But my husband, from the NE of England, always describes the thing he fastens to her collar as... her 'leader'. So - here is a picture of two of them -

That's a creative choice. Pippin's 'leader' is purple.
Thank you. I think purple would be very smart.
Jiffy has quite a range ... Dad had a rainbow coloured one that he used, whereas at the moment he has a boring black one
She has another red one somewhere, too - and a pretty collar attached to the retractable lead there and another pretty patterned spare one.

Perhaps we should buy her a prettier one, but the one used most of the time is the retractable one anyway. Although I might look for one in a different colour for a change.
Very interesting. It's not a term I know, but I have never had a dog to lead or be led by.
I have heard other people use it, too - my cousin's wife is from somewhere in the west of the city (Benwell I think), and she uses it too. And even after all these years I still think it sounds weird when either of them say it!
This is interesting - in German, you use a different word for the item, "Leine" one that doens't indicate that you're leading something (which in many case the human at one end of this doesn't do anyway *g*) - the term also servers for any purpose when something needs to be tied or secured. Now I'm wondering if it's just chance that the terms for this are so different or if there are also different ideas behind it. *tries to force over-inquisitive mind back into cupboard*
Language is forever fascinating!
