Mirror

This mirror has a history. In my late teens I worked briefly as a care assistant in a job that was superannuated. Then left to do my nursing degree. I was able to claim back the small amount I had paid into the superannuation scheme - about £25 I think (remember this was the 1970s!)

I decided to use some of it to buy myself something I really wanted but had considered too much of an extravagance - a painted mirror. They were all the rage back then.

So I went to the famous Sunday market on Newcastle quayside and spent hours liking at various mirrors on various stalls. Finally I splashed out and bought this one for about half that little windfall.

And it has moved with me 9 or so times since then, and now hangs on our living room wall where I still use it to every day.

Oh, painted mirrors. Yes, I remember them. Often Art Nouveau designs, as I remember.
And adverts for booze! I remember my cousin having one for Southern Comfort :)

I remember one of the reasons I chose this one was because the picture is to one side, so it is also a functional mirror for checking hair and face.
What a lovely story! And the mirror is really beautiful. The image is a bit blurry so I can't tell for sure, but is this an Aubrey-Beardsley-inspired painting?
Yes, it is rather Aubrey Beardsley in style.
