Ouch. Does that happen every time?

It doesn't if you wear the guard supplied... Mine was a bit tight so I thought I could manage without. Not one of my better decisions!

Oww! You need a heavy armguard! I learned the hard way that the bow could take off the first layer of skin if it wasn't protected.

On television and the movies, they make archery look so effortless. And painless!

Been there, done that. Adjust the bracer so it fits you comfortably (I don't know what kind you have, whether it involves getting longer lacing or replacing the elastic). And if by chance you snap your chest rather than your arm (there's a reason for the chest guards you see worn), the only thing that seems to help is to get someplace private enough to RUB the afflicted area very hard.
