Sequoia roots

Probably not my greatest picture ever, but I just love the scale. This was taken at the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park. I actually prefer the Tuolumne Grove as it's much less touristy, but this tree-- I think it's named "The Fallen Monarch"-- really shows the roots beautifully. They're a lot more shallow than you'd expect.

Interestingly, this tree fell about 300 years ago. Sequoia (and also redwood) is very resistant to decay. Cool, right?

Root (canal, that is)

Good to know that I'm getting something besides a good income tax refund out of this whole procedure. This may be my favourite medical procedure ever; the previous week I was all but clawing my face off from the pain...
