Autumn

Autumn.

We are now well into autumn, it feels. Temperatures of 15 or 16C, swirls of dry leaves blowing in the winds of the equinoctial gales, and berries ripening.
I couldn't manage a good picture of the whirling leaves, but I can share with you pictures of both red berries;

And blackberries;

Blackberries

The blackberry bramble brings back such good memories. When I was little, we lived in Surrey, near a golf course which had blackberry bushes all around the perimeter. We kids could squeeze through the bars of the fence and fill buckets with blackberries. If berries made it home they would be combined with the tart cooking apples from our tree into what was the most perfect pie ever made by anyone anywhere. Or at least, that's what I believed.
I love blackberry and apple pie - and blackberry crumble is the epitome of autumn. But those I picked today are destined to be steeped in brandy until Christmas, when the brandy will be bottled and the blackberries consumed as great delicacies.
Mmmm, blackberries. I remember picking blackberries as a kid and my mom making delicious pies. ::wants pie, damn you::
Those ones didn't remain on the bush for long - they are destined for either blackberry crumble or blackberry brandy.
That second one is a very familiar sight here right now too! It's the time of year when I take a bag with me when I go for my daily so I can stock up on berries for the day.
I carry a sandwich box - and I am freezing a lot of them so that I will eventually have enough to make a litre or so of blackberry brandy.
