Week 1

Another newbie!

This a picture I took about 15 years ago in Wiltshire and is the entrance to the West Kennet Long Barrow, a Neolithic chambered long barrow close to the World Heritage Site at Avebury (which contains numerous monuments, including the famous stone circles as well as an ancient procession way and Silbury Hill).

I have been inside and can confirm that you can't reach the undeworld from there - at least not on a sunny summer afternoon!

Now that is a neat gateway! Wow, just thinking about the history stuns me a little bit.
And to think the people who built it had to get that stone up a steep hill without mechanical help as well!
That has a lovely, eerie feeling... even in sunlight!
It certainly does! Going inside still feels invasive somehow, even if it was emptied long ago.
Fancy seeing you here...

I've somehow never been to Avebury, despite relentless Stonehenge visits as a child. That's one impressive gateway.
I know! I get about.

Avebury is my second favouritest place in the universe (after the Somerset levels). Mush better than Stonehenge. Plus you can go White Horse spotting on the chalk hills! http://wiltshirewhitehorses.org.uk/map.html - I collected the complete set of current horses!
Oh wow - it looks as if it ought to be the gateway to the underworld - perhaps you just didn't have the right password... :)
Perhaps I should be thankful for that?

How disappointing! But it's still a great shot.
Yeah, but I am not sure I'd really want to go down there anyway!
I'm sure the Underworld is highly overrated as a vacation destination. Probably very overcrowded, too!
They rarely let you leave either.
That is a fabulous gateway, that's for sure!
Just as well, it was a bit of a walk to get there!
