Old

courtauld 008

This rather lovely fireplace is obviously not new, nor in use any more, but it mostly amuses me because it's in one of the bathrooms at the Courtauld Institute in London. You may make an old building (1776) into a modern university college, but if it's listed (as this is), you don't quite get to wipe out the traces of the old.

When I say bathroom, btw, I mean loo. Even my granny's house didn't have a fireplace in the actual loo with you. Strangely unnerving.

I really love fireplaces ... whenever I go round a house, those are the things I tend to spot.
They're definitely worth looking at - I cheer when people rediscover old ones.
Hmm - it's a wonder no-one has put a bunch of flowers into it! Or the spare loo roll....
I was there in the holidays; I bet the students do something with it in termtime!
Mmmmm, that bathroom must have been warm and toasty.
*g* I bet it was; but I was there in August. It was pretty hot without any need for fires!
What an interesting conversation piece! I suppose you could use the grate as a magazine rack...
It's wonderfully out of place in among all the institutional furnishings. In a good way!
Fireplace on the loo? *g* That is quite something! A fascinating and very beautiful prompt answer.
It is a little unnerving somehow. But rather beautiful too.
We have it so good with even heating throughout homes now. I can remember my grandparents' pot-bellied stove. That room was hot, but all the others were frigid.
